Why Thyroid is a weight loss hormone?
The thyroid hormone is important in maintaining a healthy weight. If your thyroid is low you will have what is called hypothyroidism. This reduces the rate at which the body burns fat and can cause you not to have energy too. Too much thyroid and you have hyperthyroidism. This condition can make you lose weight among other things.
So it is important to have the right amount of thyroid. If you are trying to lose weight and having trouble, have your thyroid checked to see if it is working correctly.
Tyroid Hormone and its job:
The thyroid has several other jobs too! The hormones it secretes help regulate heart rate, maintain healthy skin, and play a crucial part in metabolism. When the gland is sluggish (hypothyroidism), it can rob you of energy, dry out your skin, make your joints ache, cause weight gain, and kick-start depression. When it becomes overworked—hyperthyroidism—and produces too much hormone, it can cause racing heart, sleep disturbances, and weight loss. That’s a lot of grief for a gland the size and shape of a buckeye butterfly.
Thyroid Hormone and Its Functions
Medically, the term thyroid refers to the endocrine gland in the neck below laryngeal prominence/Adam’s apple. And thyroid hormones generally designates to two types of hormones, namely triiodothyronine(T3) and thyroxine(T4) even though calcitonin too is synthesized by thyroid gland. Both hormones are synthesized with Iodine as a major component. Thyroid hormones have a crucial role in the growth and development of human body especially in brain maturation at the time of fetal development. But, the consistent function of T3 and T4 is the massive control of human body metabolism. Both have role in functioning of almost every cell in the human body.

What is Hyperthyroidism?
Abnormalities of thyroid gland are hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism and thyroid nodules. Hyperthyroidism is the state causing over production of thyroid hormones. Hypothyroidism is the case when amount of thyroid hormones synthesized by the gland is insufficient. Deficiency of iodine in the diet and severe stress are alleged causes of hypothyroidism. Also there is congenital hypothyroidism which is thyroid deficiency by birth. When adequate amount of T3 and T4 are not present, body metabolism rate declines to abnormal level causing fat and carbs to cumulate and body functioning to decelerate. This condition leads to obesity exclusive of any eating disorder. Hypothyroidism may also lead to non-toxic goiter growth.
How to fix it?
As in many cases, hypothyroidism can also be steered to a certain limit with dietary and lifestyle actions. Apart from stress management most of the control actions are dietary. Most importantly, boost the iodine supply by including iodine rich food into the diet. Fish sticks, shrimp, milk, tuna, strawberry, banana etc are some. Iodized salt is a perfect iodine carrier. A critical measure is to strictly avoid certain food items such as goitrogenic food items, caffeine beverages, soy, gluten rich food etc. in the diet of hypothyroid patients. Other dietary controls consist increasing fat and protein intake in the diet.
Most relevant and often executed hypothyroidism treatment is hormone replacement therapy. A synthetic form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine termed levothyroxine is advocated to hypothyroid patients to compensate in bodily thyroxine level. As every hormone replacement treatments are infamous for its adverse effects, slight overdose of levothyroxine can induce heart palpitations, abdominal pain, nausea, anxiousness, confusion, agitation, insomnia, weight loss, and increased appetite. Therefore, the dosage has to be fixed with at most care and under normal TSH reference level. Suppression of TSH levels below normal for a long term can induce cardiac side-effects and contribute to decreases in bone mineral density.
